Kuhns is a fixture in the Door County Wisconsin music scene. In addition to performing solos shows, Small Forest performances and shows with George Sawyn, she also conceived of and manages two concert series. Woodwalk Concert Series and Lost Moth Concert Series book present national and local singer/songwriters of the highest caliber.
Kuhns started out singing in folk festivals in her college years, started out majoring in art and finished earning a Registered Nursing degree. She stepped away from performing while she raised her three children. She began her music career again in 1998, singing and recording with her brother Roger Kuhns, then followed her passion to sing and write songs about empowering women who had struggled thru domestic violence and sexual abuse. She was part of the “Out of the Shadows” project as a participant and singer and traveled with Jan Goff La Fontaine , performing her songs, telling her story and assisting La Fontaine in her project to help women heal.
She started up the band Lost Mothra 2007 with George Sawyn and Patrick Palmer, often including guest musicians on her cds and in performances. In 2013 her band evolved into a Mother /Daughter band, teaming up with Marybeth Mattson, sharing lead vocals and harmonies equally , merging both womens songwriting styles and musical backgrounds. Patrick Palmer stayed with them on bass and the band Small Forest was born. George Sawyn and Kuhns continued to play weddings together and he sat in with Small Forest for special shows. The combination of Lost Mothra and Small Forest is well known for their annual Base Camp Christmas Show the Friday before Christmas. Small Forest has traveled the Midwest mostly and concentrated their summers in Door County singing in the parks, pavilions and reataurants and private house concerts. They have participated in many community events such as Pride of Door County Annual Concert, Steel Bridge Songfest as venue coordinaters and writers, Go Bo annual Pay it Forward Concert and Womens Fund Artrageous.
Jeanne Kuhns has released Riverbed 203, Lost Moth Found 2005, Ghost Ranch 2008, My Christmas Day 2010 with George Sawyn, Beautifully Strange 2012 with Lost Mothra and Dream with Small Forest 2014.
In 2019 Small Forest has gotten a little smaller as Patrick Palmer retires. Jeane Kuhns and Marybeth Mattson the unstoppable Mother /Daughter songwriting team continue performing a full schedule of show. In addition both Kuhns and Mattson are continuing with their solo careers. Kuhns also performing with George Sawyn releasing a cd of favorite standards and classics February 2019 called Blood Roots.
Small Forest would love to increase their performances for womens groups and house concerts in 2019!
